ELGIN, Ill. and COLUMBUS, Ohio —Heritage-Crystal Clean, Inc. (NASDAQ: HCCI) and Battle will join forces to address one of today’s most daunting environmental challenges: the removal and destruction of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from wastewater.
Battelle has selected Heritage-Crystal Clean, Inc. (Crystal Clean) as its partner to use, market and service Battelle’s PFAS destruction technology for commercial applications. Crystal Clean will use these key technologies in its own wastewater treatment plants and in third-party landfills, wastewater treatment plants and other commercial applications. Crystal Clean will also work with Battelle for use of the technology on other sites and for other applications.
Battelle’s PFAS Annihilator™ uses supercritical water oxidation (SCWO) to destroy PFAS in industrial wastewater, landfill leachate and other contaminated waters. It is a market leading solution for the removal and destruction of PFAS in waste treatment facilities.
“The properties of PFAS are unique – they are oil and water repellent, temperature resistant and reduce friction – which makes them extremely difficult to remove,” said Amy Dindal, Battelle PFAS program manager. “Unlike other treatment methods that can displace PFAS, such as incineration or filtering, Battelle™ Nullifier breaks the carbon-fluorine bond and destroys PFAS.
For Brian Recatto, CEO of Crystal Clean, the need to add PFAS destruction capabilities for his business came from his customers. “We take calls all the time asking if we can help get rid of PFAS,” he said. “We are a leader in wastewater treatment and we need to implement rapid and large-scale solutions so that we can solve this critical problem in order to prevent harm to human health or the environment. We look forward to working closely with the experts at Battelle to commercialize and implement this breakthrough technology. »
The implementation of this PFAS destruction solution is timely given the intent of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as defined by its PFAS Strategic Roadmap initiate the development of rules to limit releases of PFAS from industrial sources.
