Government jobs are becoming increasingly popular due to their unique benefits, such as job security, public facilities, and nice paychecks. Although other jobs like a position in a multinational company or a technical role in a development organization are known for their lucrative salary offers, government jobs also offer a high pay scale.
Who are government employees?
People who work in positions created by the government, are paid by the government, and receive government benefits are considered government employees.

It can range from a secretary to an office assistant or from a manager to a driver. Non-military government employees are generally classified into two categories: executive and non-executive.
All employees are divided into a total of 20 grades. Typically, cadre officers are those from grade 9 onwards. These ranks represent the step of their position according to the hierarchy.
A 1st grade employee is equivalent to a secretary/principal secretary, while a 2nd grade employee is equivalent to an additional secretary. A 3rd grade employee is equivalent to a joint secretary, while a 5th grade employee is equivalent to an assistant secretary. A Principal Assistant Secretary is usually placed as a 6th grade employee.
An assistant secretary, a cameraman, a producer, a protocol officer, etc. are considered 9th grade employees. Again, a grade 10 employee can be an assistant protocol officer, senior nursing staff, etc.
In the timeline, from grades 11 through 15, employees are equivalent to a property inspector, assistant superintendent, imam, assistant safety inspector, and driver.
From grades 16 to 20, employees are equivalent to PPC operators, duplicator operators, security assistants, muazzin, and guards/cleaners (timeline).
For example, a 4th grade officer can be a teacher in the education setting or an additional DIG in the police setting, etc. But, again, a police commissioner can be a grade 5 officer.
What is a National Salary Scale?
The national salary scale is the salary scale that determines the basic monthly salary, monthly allowance, annual bonus, etc. for the state employee. This generally includes all the facilities that a government employee will receive depending on their ranks and other applicable conditions.
In Bangladesh, the national wage scale is suggested by a wage commission set up by the government. This is usually revised when the government sees fit. Since independence, there have been eight revisions to the salary grid.
The latest gadget in effect at the time of this article is the National Pay Scale 2015. This is the 8th National Pay Scale, offered by the 8th Pay Commission.
Remuneration and facilities for the President, Prime Minister or Speaker of Parliament do not fall under this rating system. As a general rule, they fall rather under the law of remuneration and privileges.
Monthly base salary
The salaries and other benefits of government employees vary according to the ranks assigned to them. Each rank offers a different base monthly salary scale and additional benefits such as allowances.
The highest basic monthly salary is 78,000 BDT, while the lowest basic monthly salary is 8,250 BDT. According to the basic rules, the highest monthly salary is offered to 1st year employees, while the lowest monthly allowance is paid to 20th year employees.
A basic monthly salary range is also decided within each grade. This is because of the annual increase an employee receives while in the same grade (eg not receiving a promotion to a different grade).
For example, if a 5th year employee does not receive a promotion to become a 4th year employee, but continues to work, then there will be an annual increase towards their monthly base salary.

Monthly salary with allowance
Employees may receive allowances based on factors such as their grade level eligibility, need, location, number of children, etc.
There is no proper way to determine the final salary a government employee receives per month (basic monthly salary and monthly allowances combined) as there are many variable factors such as rent allowances/benefits, medical allowance, travel expenses, etc. also added.
Although the salary commission is set to provide a monthly salary of up to BDT 78,000, this may increase when allowances are taken into account. Final salary differences may also differ due to other factors in different institutions.
Employees may receive allowances, privileges or other benefits for various reasons.
For example, an employee can receive a rent allowance according to his living space and his grade. Typically, their housing allowance can be between 35% and 65% of their salary. The scale of allowances depends on the range of their basic monthly salary and the society under which they live. For example, the allowance scale for Dhaka City Corporation and Khulna City Corporation is different.
A minimum of BDT 1,500 is offered to employees per month for medical allowance. This allowance is 2,500 BDT for seniors (over 65).
For each child of an employee, an allowance of at least BDT 500 per month is offered for their education. For two children, the allowance would be BDT 1,000. This school allowance is limited to two children only.
On the occasion of the Bengali New Year (Pohela Boishakh), employees will receive compensation equal to 20% of their salary.
There are unique benefits depending on the employee assignment and the organization involved. For example, an employee of the Ministry of Water Resources/Other Ministries receives an additional allowance due to a foreign allowance.
The army and police receive benefits such as rations for clothing, food, medicine, etc.
Ultimately, the final payout is not the same for everyone, but depends on many variables.
