- Particular responsibility as a single supplier and “trusted advisor” who masters all printing technologies on virtually all substrates available in its main markets
- Focus on the core packaging, post press, industrial commercial printing and security printing markets
- Coherent transformation into an agile technology group based on the growing importance of software and digital solutions
- An agent of change and innovation within the printing industry through integrated system solutions and a wide range of digital printing presses
Koenig & Bauer continues its transformation from a traditional machine manufacturer into an agile technology group. Based on global megatrends and intense discussions with customers and industry experts, the company has set its strategic direction for the coming years. The path it is already taking towards more digitization and a higher degree of modularity will not only lead to more success in Koenig & Bauer’s core markets, with packaging printing at the forefront – it will also result in less material and energy used in the printing process, making them more durable. In addition, Koenig & Bauer is also setting itself even more ambitious sustainability goals with its new group strategy “Exceeding Print”. Along with its responsibility towards its customers and employees, as a member of the United Nations Global Compact, the largest sustainable development initiative in the world, the Group aims to further increase its efforts to fulfill its ecological, social and community responsibilities.
A commitment to sustainability goals for the future
“By 2025, we aim to reduce CO2 emissions from our production plants by 75% and intend to be completely carbon neutral from 2030,” said CEO Andreas Pleßke. “As the industry’s leading provider of sustainable solutions, we help our customers reduce their ecological footprint. The solutions based on the technology we have developed reduce energy consumption, waste and ink and coating consumption, thus helping to reduce CO2 emissions.
Energy efficiency and climate protection
Koenig & Bauer uses an energy management system to pave the way for its customers to be more energy efficient in printing operations and help them steer their production processes in a sustainable direction. As a member of the 4evergreen Alliance network, Koenig & Bauer can start working with paper and board manufacturers, folding box producers, brand owners, technology and material suppliers, as well as with the collection, sorting and recycling industry, at an early stage to find appropriate solutions. Koenig & Bauer maintains a partnership with ClimatePartner to promote efforts to offset CO2 emissions by supporting projects certified to protect the climate. In addition, the company is a partner of the sustainable development initiative “BlueCompetence” managed by the VDMA and is the first manufacturer of printing machines to become a member of the “Healthy Printing” network.
Modularity: the key to more efficiency
Koenig & Bauer is the only machine manufacturer in the world to master all industrial printing processes on all substrates in its main markets. Customers benefit from a wide range of products, the experience and technical expertise that the company has accumulated over more than 200 years of history. As the world’s oldest printing machine manufacturer, Koenig & Bauer has always viewed its role as that of an industry pioneer and innovative force.
A modular platform for future generations of machines offers customers many advantages. “Not only are new technologies ready for the market faster, but integrated control of machines and systems and standardization of maintenance become possible,” emphasizes Michael Ulverich, Member of the Board of Directors and COO. “The modular principle ensures that customers continue to benefit from tailor-made solutions. Standardizing a number of elements opens up more possibilities for innovation and individualization, while maintaining the same high quality. Koenig & Bauer intends to maintain its entrepreneurial independence in the future by maintaining a high level of vertical integration – from the smallest cogwheel to complex units.
Digitalization: Group-wide solutions, tailored to customers
In addition to machines, digital services are becoming increasingly important for the networking of machines with each other, the collection and analysis of data and the effective control of processes. Koenig & Bauer develops digital services based on highly scalable cloud platforms and makes them available to customers through a collaboration portal. Machine data analysis forms the basis for performance evaluation, benchmarking and industrial analysis scenarios. In combination with machine learning, this enables Koenig & Bauer to identify potential malfunctions in processes much earlier and more precisely, and to start service and maintenance fully automatically. Unscheduled downtime can thus be reduced and maintenance intervals can be changed accordingly.
“Koenig & Bauer switched to a cloud-based customer relationship management (CRM) platform, an industry-leading product, in 2010,” adds Ralf Sammeck, Board member of the Sheetfed segment and CDO . “Across the Group, sales, service and marketing, along with adjacent functions, all use the CRM application, which also provides performance data for machines connected within the network. This enables Koenig & Bauer employees to provide clients with advice that meets their expectations every time they are in contact. “Software is the engine of our transformation from a machine manufacturer into a technology company,” continues Sammeck. “Our customers benefit from a consistent integration of data-optimized work management processes and processes that use data as a basis.
Short set-up times and flexible processes in packaging printing
Koenig & Bauer’s high-performance digital presses offer packaging printing customers new business models for very small-run printing, rapidly changing requirements, security features, tracking and traceability solutions , as well as personalization and individualization. Emphasis is placed on the entire value chain with a view to optimizing costs. Easy-to-use human-machine interfaces make operation more intuitive for customers. Koenig & Bauer responds to the trend of hybrid printing processes in the paper, board, corrugated board and film segments by combining analogue and digital printing and finishing technologies. This allows the advantages of both applications to be optimally exploited, expanding the range of substrates on which it is possible to print. By entering the food and beverage cardboard industry, Koenig & Bauer will enable digital color printing on cardboard packaging in the future.
“Digital printing processes will be a catalyst for new business models,” Christoph Müller, member of the Board of Directors of the Digital & Webfed segment, is convinced. “We assume that most of the companies that will be our customers in the future have not even been founded yet.”
We support social responsibility and diversity, and reject discrimination
Greater diversity within the company in terms of gender, age and internationality has also been adopted as a social objective as part of the Koenig & Bauer strategic plan. A central point is the promotion of women, for example through mentoring and career programs, and by introducing far-reaching measures to reconcile family and career, as well as initiatives to combat discrimination and racism. “Our aim is to be an employer of choice for everyone,” as Pleßke emphasizes. As a company with regional roots, Koenig & Bauer assumed social responsibility from the start. As has been the case for over 150 years, the company continues to train future skilled workers in its own vocational school and guarantees employment after their apprenticeship is completed. Koenig & Bauer supports cultural and social institutions at its Group sites and around the world.
CFO Dr Stephen Kimmich is convinced: “By committing to our ecological, social and community responsibility, we are sending an important signal to the capital market. Koenig & Bauer is the only printing machine manufacturer to master all industrial printing processes on just about all types of substrates – even on corrugated board – and provide software, systems and services for the whole printing and finishing processes. After all, optimizing the “total cost of the process” is more than ever a key factor for our customers in any decision about which technology to purchase. It also gives the company good reason to see itself as a “trusted advisor” to its customers and an agent of change and innovation in the printing industry. “Exceeding Print” will contribute to the achievement of our medium-term financial objectives, which foresee a turnover of 1.3 billion euros and an EBIT margin of more than 7%. “
“Our ‘Exceeding Print’ strategy allows us to promote sustainability as the biggest challenge facing the packaging industry in the future, and to defend our position as a leader in digitalization,” said Dr. Andreas Pleßke, summarizing the measures that have been decided on. “This means organic growth with our own business models and products, but does not exclude growth through acquisitions. “
